The MTN App of the Year Awards invites all eligible youth to participate in the inaugural Best Youth App category. Participants must be between the ages of 18 and 26 years old and have participated in the MTN Business App Academy and the hackathon.

The MTN Business App Academy is an online app development campaign. Applicants will be mentored and tutored by experts in the field, ensuring that each individual is up-skilled for a future career in app development.

Developers will participate in an online coding programme, with the objective to solving a common social challenge facing South Africa. These are – access to education, safety, and access to health.

Each participant will be expected to have an app or idea in mind, which will then be explored and developed over the three-month period.

At the end of this, each solution will be entered into the annual App of the Year Awards under the Best Youth App category, with the top three solutions in line for winning a share of R100 000.

Training and workshops

Candidates will undergo training sessions to teach them various modules on app building. This section of the campaign will kick off with a briefing session for all developers – which will cover the problem statement, examples of similar solutions and what to expect throughout the journey.

The modules are video based, and students can download notes in pdf after each session. This content will be housed on the www.appoftheyear.co.za website. Videos of sessions covered will be made available for developers to access on demand.

Hackathon

Developers will spend 72 hours using the knowledge from the workshops to develop their solutions in a virtual hackathon. Tutors and scrum masters will be constantly available to assist with questions and queries from developers. Parallel refresher sessions will run throughout the weekend. Exciting activations and spot prizes will take place, examples are

  1. Airtime and data vouchers
  2. Developers who are logged on at a certain time will be surprised with food deliveries at their locations.
  3. Quiz sessions with devices as prizes

Developers will be required to submit an MVP.
