254 submissions were received this year, sparking heated debate and discussion in each of the categories between the five judges. All were in agreement however that the quality and calibre of the apps submitted this year far outweighed those of 2012, making it incredibly difficult to choose the winners. Ultimately, those apps that were intuitive, simply designed, easy to use and install, added value and showed improved functionality and innovation proved the most successful.
The overall winner of the evening went to SnapScan, an innovative app that enables consumers to pay using only their phone, thereby eliminating the need for cash, wallets or a card. Developed in Stellenbosch, the app is still in its fledgling stage and is in the process of being rolled out to merchants in the area.
